On January 30, 2024 Patrick Brannelly, CEO of The 10,000 Brains Project, presented at a conference in London, England. The conference was titled “Advancing Neuroscience, AI, and Ethics in Dementias and Brain Health”. It was organized by the Applied Neuroscience Association and hosted by King’s College London.
This conference brought together a globally diverse collection of academic researchers, industry innovators, policy makers, and philanthropists to engage in constructive dialogue about proactive solutions to the ethical dilemmas facing AI researchers.
Mr. Brannelly’s presentation was titled “Treating Neurodegenerative Disease through the Ethical Application of Artificial Intelligence”. It explained why AI is a uniquely powerful tool for accelerating the development of precision medicine approaches in neurodegenerative disease. It also described some of the key ethical challenges that The 10,000 Brains Project will help the research community to address, such as mitigating bias in model development, protecting patients’ personal data, and maintaining clinician oversight in the delivery of care.
Mr. Brannelly said, “It’s not a coincidence that our organization’s first-ever conference presentation is focused on the ethical use of AI. This is truly a game changing technology for our field, but patients and other stakeholders will rightly ask if the community is taking a responsible approach to its development. We need to tackle these ethical issues up front, and not just as an afterthought. One of our main priorities is to serve as a resource to our colleagues as they grapple with these important issues.”
